Inferring rheology from free-surface observations

چکیده
We develop direct inversion methods for inferring the rheology of a fluid from observations its shallow flow. First, evolution equation free-surface flow an inertia-less current with general constitutive law is derived. The relationship between volume flux and basal stress, $\tau_b$ encapsulated by single function $F(\tau_b)$, which depends only on law. method consists (i) determining stress evolution, (ii) comparing to constrain $F$ (iii) $F$. Examples are presented both steady transient flows demonstrating that wide range laws can be directly obtained. For in velocity known, we derive different method, circumvents need calculate flux.

Inferring causal networks from observations and interventions
Information about the structure of a causal system can come in the form of observational data— random samples of the system’s autonomous behavior—or interventional data—samples conditioned on the particular values of one or more variables that have been experimentally manipulated. Here we study people’s ability to infer causal structure from both observation and intervention, and to choose info...
متن کاملInferring Actions and Observations from Interactions
This study follows the Radial Interactionism (RI) cognitive modeling paradigm introduced previously by Georgeon and Aha (2013). An RI cognitive model uses sensorimotor interactions as primitives—instead of observations and actions—to represent Piagetian (1955) sensorimotor schemes. Constructivist epistemology suggests that sensorimotor schemes precede perception and knowledge of the external wo...
متن کاملInferring the Oriented Elastic Tensor from Surface Wave Observations: Preliminary Application Across the Western United States
S U M M A R Y Radial and azimuthal anisotropy in seismic wave speeds have long been observed using surface waves and are believed to be controlled by deformation within the Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle. Although radial and azimuthal anisotropy reflect important aspects of anisotropic media, few studies have tried to interpret them jointly. We describe a method of inversion that interprets...
متن کاملInferring Segmented Surface Description from Stereo Data
We present an integrated approach to the derivation of scene description from binocular stereo images. Unlike popular stereo approaches, we address both the stereo correspondence problem and the surface reconstruction problem simultaneously by inferring the scene description directly from local measurements of both point and line correspondences. In order to handle the issues of noise, indistin...
متن کاملInferring Aerosol Forcing from Surface Temperature
The Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 0.8 K over 3 the last 100 years partly due to human activities. If not for the poorly un-4 derstood radiative effects of aerosols, one would have been able to better use 5 the observed warming to constrain the all-important transient climate re-6 sponse (TCR, the pace of the warming caused by a continuous buildup of 7 greenhouse gases). Here we...
